Korean and American politics are both extremely polarized. I think it¡¯s the result of the relativism that dominates today¡¯s thought and culture. Korea and the U.S. were under an absolute value system, Confucian for the former and Christianity for the latter. Since there was a common standard, discussion of what is considered right or wrong was possible.
In a relativistic society, all value systems are equal. There is no right or wrong, only people who agree with or oppose one¡¯s values. Thus, the polarization begins.

Social media accelerates this polarization. Because most posts are short, some writers exaggerate or use inflammatory language to get their points across quickly. As these posts make their way through the internet, people automatically accept them as fact without checking for truthfulness. Furthermore people obtain their new and information only from the sources that belong to their camp, deepening their prejudices.

Polarization destroys the democratic process because democracy is based on negotiation and compromise. When society is polarized, compromise becomes impossible as it is perceived as capitulation or betrayal. When the democratic process no longer works, changes in leadership are tumultuous or even violent, sparking impeachment or revolutions.

Hostility can be greatly reduced if people, rather than immediately suspecting or mistrusting their opponent¡¯s intentions, accept the legitimacy of the other¡¯s opinions. When each side is able to acknowledge that the other is neither evil nor imbecilic, and recognize that their differences are actually about methods, polarization would be greatly reduced and the democratic process would be preserved.

It is imperative that Christians not let themselves be defined by their political party. No party¡¯s policies are wholly aligned with God¡¯s will. I suggest those who consider themselves conservative watch CNN occasionally and those who consider themselves liberal watch Fox News. If people are able to do this with an open mind, it can encourage understanding of other viewpoints.
