Why The House Church? (가정교회를 하게된 이유)- In Korean/English
가정교회는 신약 교회 회복을 목표로 합니다. 되다 보니 제가 이 운동을 시작한 사람이 되었는데 비전이나 계획을 갖고 시작한 것이 아닙니다.
저는 모태 신앙이었지만, 대학교 들어가면서 염증을 느껴 교회를 떠났습니다. 그러다가 미국 유학 와서 대학원에서 박사 공부할 때 성경책을 통독하게 되었고, 이를 계기로 예수님을 영접하게 되었습니다. 주님이 내 인생의 주인이시라면 그분 뜻대로 사는 것은 당연한 것으로 생각되었습니다. 그래서 성경이 제 삶을 기준이 되었습니다. (성경대로 살았다는 의미는 아니고 그렇게 살려고 노력했다는 뜻이지만 ^^;)
당시 제가 열심히 신앙생활을 하니까 신학 하고 목사 되라는 권유가 있었지만, 귀에 들어오지 않았습니다. 평신도 입장에서는 “이렇게 사십시오.”라고 말해주는 사람보다 “이렇게 사는 겁니다.” 보여주는 사람이 더 필요하지 않은가? 난 목사가 되는 대신 평신도로 목사처럼 살아보겠다고 결심했습니다.
그러던 중 연구소에서 일하고 있던 41세에 하나님께서 평신도 사역은 그만하고 평신도 사역자를 키우는 사역을 하라고 하시는 것 같아서, 1년을 고민을 하다가 순종하여 신학교에 입학하여 3년 후에 목사 안수를 받았습니다.
목사가 된 이후에도 여전히 성경이 삶의 기준이 될 수밖에 없었는데, 갈등이 생겼습니다. “성경에 목회를 어떻게 하라고 분명히 기록되어 있는데 왜 목사님들이 그대로 목회를 안 하나?” “주님이 원하시는 교회의 모습이 성경에 나와 있는데, 왜 오늘날의 교회가 성경에 기록된 교회 모습과 다른가?” “왜 성도들은 성경에서 명령하는 삶을 살지 않는가?”
그러던 중 휴스턴서울교회에서 담임 초청이 왔습니다. 가정교회를 부임 조건으로 걸렀고, 이에 동의하여 1993년 1월 1일에 부임했습니다. 14년 된 교회 3대 목사로 부임했는데, 전임 목사님들이 교인들을 말씀으로 잘 양육시켜 놓으셔서 부임 후 9 개월 만에 가정교회를 출범시킬 수 있었습니다.
신약성경에 기록된 교회 비슷하게 만들어보려고 노력만 했는데도 불구하고, 성경적인 열매가 보이기 시작하였습니다. 성경적인 교회 열매는 다음과 같다고 생각합니다. (1) 믿을 수 없는 사람이 예수를 믿는다, (2) 변할 것 같지 않았던 사람의 삶이 변한다. (3) 교회 생활에 기쁨이 있다.
20년 사역을 하고 2012년에 휴스턴서울교회에서 은퇴했습니다. 그동안 하나님께서 교회 성장도 시켜 주셨습니다. 장년 주일 출석 인원이 120명 정도에서 1,000명이 되었고 (어린이와 영어부 합치면 2,000명), 23개의 목장이 거의 190개가 되었고, 매주일 평균 2~3명씩 예수님을 영접하고 침례를 받았습니다. 제가 은퇴할 때 통계를 내보니 교인들의 84%가 저에게 침례를 받았습니다.
온전히 하나님의 은혜입니다. 주님께서는 원하셨던 교회를 이루려 마음만 먹어도 은혜를 베푸시는 것 같습니다. ^^

I happen to be the one who started the house church movement, which some people call the second Reformation, but I had neither a vision nor a master plan when doing so.
I was born into a Christian family and raised in a Christian home but received Jesus Christ as my Lord when I was in graduate school at the Ohio State University. With Jesus now the Lord of my life, I felt like the most obvious thing to do was to live life as directed in Scripture.
I obtained a PhD in engineering and got a job at a lab in Silicon Valley in Northern California. At church I was active in teaching and training young Christians. Then God called me to pastoral ministry when I was 41 years old. It took a year to confirm it was truly God’s calling, but eventually I enrolled at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary and was ordained as a pastor 3 years later.
When I started ministering as a pastor, the Bible continued to be my guide. I began to see how today’s church deviated from the church described in the New Testament. Neither pastors nor church members followed the guidelines prescribed in the Scripture in regards to both ministry and lifestyle.
When Seoul Baptist Church of Houston invited me to be their Senior Pastor, I told them I would come only under one condition: they must allow me to lead Seoul Baptist Church of Houston as closely as possible to the church depicted in the New Testament.
I was the third pastor of the church in the 14 years following its foundation. Thankfully my predecessors had trained the church members well, and I was able to transform the church to the house church system within 9 months of my arrival.
Although our church was far from being perfectly “Biblical”, the mere efforts in following the New Testament model produced similar results to what happened to the Church in the book of Acts. In the Biblical church: (1) Non-believes come to Christ. (2) Believers’ lives change. (3) There is joy in church life.
After 20 years of house church ministry, I retired in 2012. During that period Sunday worship attendance increased from 150 to 2,000 including children. The number of house churches multiplied from 23 to 190. An average of 2 to 3 people accepted Jesus Christ and were baptized on a weekly basis. (I baptized 84% of our church members.)
It seems God rewards even simple efforts to obey and try to build the Church Jesus had envisioned.
