The command in Mal 3:10 concerning tithing was given to the Israelites in Old Testament times, but the blessings of tithing can still be enjoyed in the New Testament era. It is actually the best way to avoid or escape poverty in modern times.
In the 1950s and 1960s in Korea, tithing was emphasized amongst Korean Christians. It was urgent to help them overcome poverty since the country was dirt poor in the aftermath of the Korean War.
Korea is now a wealthy nation. The problem for Korean Christians nowadays is affluence, not poverty. Money has become an idol for many Christians. They trust money more than God; they feel safer when they have a surplus of money in their bank accounts. They believe money will solve all their problems and bring them happiness. Under these circumstances, emphasizing tithing may encourage idolatry. Today¡¯s pastors should teach their members how to follow God¡¯s will with the money they already have rather than how to receive financial blessings from God.
I taught about tithing only once in the Living Life Bible class when I pastored Seoul Baptist Church. Instead of emphasizing tithing, I focused on Jesus¡¯ promise given in Matthew 6:33. I taught that God would meet all of our needs if we make it our highest priority to seek God¡¯s kingdom and His righteousness.
When church members obeyed this command and experienced the realization of Jesus¡¯ promise, they gave far more than a tithe.
