내가 사랑에 빠진 것 맞아? (How Do I know I Am Truly in Love?)-영어/한글
It is commonly believed that there are three kinds of love: the love of God (agape), the love of friends (philia) and the love between man and woman (eros). I struggled with the meaning of eros for a long time.
Some people consider eros as agony and pain as shown in a tragedy like Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The more agony and pain are involved, the greater the love. When one or both choose death over separation, the love becomes sublime.
Many young people today seem to think that eros is just feelings. The stronger the feeling is, the stronger the love is. So some people end up rejecting a potential marriage partner because they don’t have that particular feeling for the person. Or some couples seek divorce because the feelings they once had no longer exist.
Let me present my definition of eros. I think true love is when someone makes you feel like you are special, and you have a deep desire to make that person happy.
If this definition is correct, some relationships may be based on infatuation rather than love. If you think you love someone but that person makes you feel less than what you are, it is probably not love. Additionally, if you are attracted to someone but don’t have a desire to make that person happy, it may just be infatuation.
I hope my definition helps some young people who are questioning if they are actually in love with those whom they are dating.

잘 아시겠지만, 사랑에는 세 종류가 있습니다. 하나님의 사랑(agape), 친구의 사랑(philia), 그리고 이성의 사랑(eros)입니다. 이 세 가지 중에서 에로스 사랑의 의미를 갖고 저는 오래 동안 고민을 하였습니다.
영화나 소설에서 열렬한 연애는 번민과 갈등으로 묘사되어 있습니다. 고뇌가 깊으면 깊을수록 더 멋진 사랑입니다. 주인공이 목숨을 바치면 최고 지순의 사랑입니다. 이런 것들에 세뇌를 받아, 저도 굉장히 고통스러웠던 관계를 뜨거운 사랑이라고 착각했던 적이 있었습니다.
세상이 많이 바뀌었습니다. 요즘 사람들은 사랑이 ‘짜릿함’이라고 생각하는 것 같습니다. 싱글들은 짜릿함이 느껴지지 않는다며 괜찮은 결혼 후보자를 거부합니다. 부부들은 짜릿함이 사라졌다며 이혼을 합니다.
인생을 관조할 수 있는 나이에 접어든 요즈음, 저는 사랑을 이렇게 정의하고 싶습니다. 상대방과 같이 있으면 자신이 꽤 괜찮은 사람인 것처럼 느껴지고, 상대방을 행복하게 해주기 위하여 무엇이든 해주고 싶어지는 마음.
이 정의에 비추어 보면, 멀리 떨어져 있으면 보고 싶지만, 같이 있으면 서로 상처 주는 관계는 사랑이 아니고 집착이라고 말할 수 있겠습니다. 또 강하게 끌리지만, 상대방을 행복하게 해주고 싶은 욕구가 없는 관계는 사랑보다는 욕정이라고 말할 수 있겠습니다.
이 글이 사랑 문제를 놓고 고민하는 젊은이들에게 도움이 되면 좋겠습니다.
