The person who first introduced me to true Christianity was C.S. Lewis.
When I was in graduate school at Ohio State University, I came across an article in Readers¡¯ Digest titled ¡°The Greatest Sin.¡± The key point of the article was that out of our many sins, the greatest is human pride. This assertion was shocking to me because I had considered sin to be things like lying, stealing, or sleeping around.
The footnote said the article was an excerpt from the book Mere Christianity, written by C.S. Lewis. I bought the book right away and finished it in one sitting. It gave me a clear idea of what true Christianity is about. Shortly after, I accepted Jesus as my Lord. I have since read almost all of C.S. Lewis¡¯ books.
One of my favorites is the Chronicles of Narnia series. I have read it multiple times. It gave me a mental picture of how the world was created and how it would end. It taught me how to live a Christian life and what Christian communities should look like. I also learned about Christian love, courage, and loyalty through these books.
Sometimes spiritual truth cannot be explained in theological terms. Stories are sometimes a better medium. This series gave me as much spiritual insight as many theological books.
When I was studying at seminary, the reading list for my systematic theology class included ¡°The Last Battle,¡± the final book of the series. Obviously even seminary professors see the value of the Chronicles of Narnia as a source of theological truth.
