빛과 소금 되는 유일한 방법 (Being the Light and Salt of the Earth)-영어/한어
A survey was conducted in 2022 on the favorability of major religions in Korea. Buddhists scored 47.8 points, Catholics 46.7 points, and Protestants 32.3 points.
This unfavorable view of Protestants is evident in Korean movies and dramas, where they are depicted as hypocritical, selfish, and greedy people.
How can we change this negative perception of Christians? I think there is only one way - being willing to yield rather than to assert our rights, which may result in often getting the short end of the stick in our daily lives.
Jesus taught that if someone forces you to go one mile, we should go with him two miles [Matt 5:41].
The apostle Paul also encourages us to suffer injustice rather than go to court to settle disputes with Christian brothers [1 Corinthians 6:7]. In another word, they command us to yield to others’ needs rather than assert our own rights.
Giving up our rights does not mean we accept all unjust treatment or allow ourselves to get exploited all the time, but we can yield in small ways in our daily lives.
For example, we may give our business partner a little more than he deserves if he needs the money more than we do. We may pay for meals for those who are experiencing financial difficulty. We may volunteer to work on holidays when no one else does.
It’s hard to give up our rights because we may fear that our lives will become failures and our families will be ruined. However, I don’t think God would let that happen when our motive is to be the salt and light of the world and to honor Him. He would rather bring greater blessings, which would cover all the losses we may have suffered for His sake.
We witness such faithfulness of God in shepherds’ lives. They serve non-believers unconditionally and make a lot of sacrifices to lead them to Christ. I have never experienced any of them becoming poorer, only richer.
I think that this negative perception started because we Christians have been unwilling to make sacrifices. Therefore, it’s sacrifice, not advertisements or promotional events, that can change negative perceptions of Christians.

‘한국 리서치 여론속의 여론’ 종교인식 조사에 의하면 2022년도 주요 종교 신자 호감도가 불교 신자 47.8점, 천주교 신자46.7점, 개신교 신자 32.3점이었습니다.
개신교에 대한 호감도가 다른 종교에 비해 현저히 낮은 것은, 영화나 드라마에서도 확인할 수 있습니다. 스님이나, 신부와는 달리, 목사나 개신교도들은 이기적이고 욕심 많은 이중 인격자로 그려지고 있습니다.
어떻게 하면 이런 부정적인 이미지를 바꿀 수 있을까? 한 가지 방법밖에 없다고 생각합니다. 권리 주장 대신에 양보하는 것입니다.
예수님께서는 억지로 오 리를 가자고 하거든, 십 리를 가주라고 하셨습니다[마태 5:41]. 사도 바울은 소송하는 대신에 불의를 당하라고 하셨습니다[고린도전서 6:7]. 권리 주장을 하지 말고, 양보하라는 말입니다.
그렇다고 불의한 요구를 무조건 받아드리라는 것이 아닙니다. 악한 사람들에게 무방비로 착취 당하라는 것도 아닙니다. 크리스천의 참 모습을 엿볼 수 있도록 일상생활에서 조금 양보하고, 조금 손해보자는 것입니다.
동업한 사람과 이익을 분배할 때, 상대방이 경제적으로 어려우면 조금 더 배당해 주는 것입니다. 회식 자리를 일찍 떠나야 하면, 미안하다고 말하고 회비를 배로 내는 것입니다. 공휴일에 일할 사람이 필요한데 자원하는 사람이 없으면, 스스로 자원하는 것입니다.
이렇게 사는 것이 바른 삶인 줄은 알지만, 못 사는 이유는 두려움 때문일 것입니다. 실패한 인생을 살게 되고, 가족이 쪽박을 차게 될지 모른다는 두려움입니다. 그러나 전지전능 하신 하나님 아버지께서, 자녀들이 세상의 소금과 빛이 되기 위하여 손해를 감수할 때, 망하도록 두지 않으실 것이라고 생각합니다. 오히려 더 큰 복을 주시리라 믿습니다.
가정교회 목자 목녀들이 한 예입니다. 이들은 VIP들에게 복음을 전하기 위하여, 일방적으로 섬기고, 모든 것을 양보합니다. 그러나 삶이 궁핍해지지 않습니다. 오히려 풍요로워집니다.
개신교에 대한 부정적인 인식을 심어준 것은 크리스천들이 양보할 줄 모르고 손해보지 않으려 했기 때문입니다. 이를 바꿀 수 있는 것은, 광고나 홍보 행사가 아니라, 손해를 감수하고 양보하는 것뿐이라고 생각합니다.
