용서, 너무 어려워요 (Did I Forgive?)-영어/한글
When pastors preach on forgiveness they usually use a dramatic example. A favorite anecdote among Korean pastors is the story of Pastor YW Sohn, who adopted the young communist who killed his son.
Although this kind of example is inspiring, it can also be discouraging to those who feel they are incapable of such great courage or love.
I have a more down-to-earth understanding of forgiveness. I define forgiveness as a resolution not to seek revenge. When people are wronged, the immediate response is to seek revenge, whether overtly or covertly. I think to forgive is to suppress this urge to seek revenge and instead love the people who hurt you.
Many Christians understand Biblical love as an emotion, like warm and fuzzy feelings, but true Biblical love is action rather than feelings. Biblical love is serving others and meeting their needs. Through these actions, you are able to love your enemy. If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. (Rom 12:20)
When you continue to fight the urge to seek revenge and instead serve your enemy (an impossible task without help from the Holy Spirit within), strange things may happen. Your wounds heal, bitter memories fade, and you may even come to like your enemy. This is when you know forgiveness is complete.
However, I believe that the moment you resolve not to seek revenge, God recognizes that you have forgiven your enemy.
If preachers share more realistic examples rather than dramatic anecdotes, congregations are encouraged. One way is to tell your own personal stories. Be honest and admit that you are not perfect in your Christian walk, and tell the congregation how you try to do better.
Sermons should be encouraging, not discouraging.

설교자들이 용서를 설교할 때 흔히 예로 드는 것이 손양원 목사님입니다. 아들을 죽인 공산주의자 청년을 용서하고 양아들로 삼은 일화. 이러한 예가 큰 도전을 주기도 하지만, 절망감을 심어주기도 합니다. 그렇게 할 용기도, 사랑도 없는 사람들이 대부분이기 때문입니다.
저는 용서를 이렇게 이해합니다. 자신에게 해를 끼친 사람에게 복수하지 않겠다는 의지적인 결단. 이러한 결단은 두 가지로 표현됩니다. 내게 피해 준 사건을 더 이상 입에 올리지 않는 것과, 가해자를 섬겨주는 것입니다.
성경적인 사랑은 감정이 아니고 행위입니다. 상대방의 필요를 채워주는 것입니다. “[롬 12:20] 네 원수가 주리거든 먹을 것을 주고, 그가 목말라 하거든 마실 것을 주어라.”
그래서 원수를 사랑할 수 있습니다. 감정은 의지적으로 통제가 안 되지만, 행위는 가능하기 때문입니다.
복수하고자 하는 충동을 억누르고 내게 몹쓸 짓을 한 상대를 섬기다 보면 (성령님의 도움 없이는 절대 될 수 없습니다.) 상처받은 기억이 점점 희미해지고, 마음 상처가 점점 아물고, 그러다 보면 가해자가 좋아지게까지 됩니다. 이것이 용서의 완성입니다.
그러나 이 단계에 이르지 못했다 할지라도, 복수하지 않겠다는 의지적인 결단을 내리는 그 순간, 하나님께서는 용서한 것으로 인정해 주신다고 생각합니다.
설교자들은 도달하기 힘든 이상적인 목표만 제시해서 교인들을 절망시키지 않으면 좋겠습니다. 자신조차 목표에 도달하지 못했음을 솔직히 인정하고, 이를 위해 자신이 무엇을 하고 있는 지를 말해주어야 합니다. 그래야 설교를 듣는 사람들이 절망하지 않고, 실천할 용기를 갖게 됩니다.
