크리스천들과 사자들(So Many Christians, So Few Lions)-영어/한글
I just finished reading the book entitled “So Many Christians, So Few Lions” by David A. Williamson and George A. Yancey, published by Rowman and Littlefield. I thought the title was meant to encourage Christians to be like fierce majestic lions, but it isn’t. Exactly the opposite, actually. The book suggests that Christians should be ready to be thrown into the lions’ dens like first century Christians, but unfortunately, the number of lions are too few.
The book was written based on surveys conducted on the general public regarding the perception of Christians, especially conservative Christians. The title was a comment given by a respondent of the survey. The authors wrote that there were quite a few hostile comments like this.
The group that showed the strongest antagonism toward Christians were white, highly educated and wealthy. They are the power group with the most influence in politics, businesses, and academics. These people consider conservative Christians as uneducated, irrational, narrow-minded and easily manipulated. They think conservative Christians are trying to suppress personal freedom by imposing outdated values and morals. They believe that conservative Christians will try to take the present society back to the pre-modern period if left unchecked. Conservative Christians are dangerous to society and must be restrained.
Since this anti-Christian group hold influential positions in every walk of life in the US, churches will likely lose more privileges as religious institutions, and Christians will be more likely to suffer from covert discrimination. It’s discouraging.
However, there is a silver lining in Christians being a persecuted minority group. This may sift the wheat from the chaff for churches and refine church members’ faith. This may also force Christians to rely only on Jesus, resulting in true revival as it happened in the first century when churches were under Roman persecution.

“So Many Christians, So Few Lions(크리스천은 많은데, 사자는 적다) ”라는 책을 추천 받았습니다. 처음 책 제목을 보았을 때에는 막연하게, 사자와 같이 용맹한 크리스천이 되자는 내용일 것이라고 생각했습니다. 그런데 읽어보니 반대였습니다. 보수 크리스천에 대한 비기독교인들의 혐오감에 관한 책이었습니다. 로마 제국에서 그러했던 것처럼, 크리스천들을 사자 굴에 던져 넣으면 좋겠는데, 사자들이 부족하다는 것이 제목의 의미입니다.
David A. Williamson와 George A. Yancey가 공저한 이 책은 미국 국민들을 대상으로 설문 조사를 하고, 이에 기초해서 일반 대중이 크리스천에 관해 어떤 생각을 갖고 있는지를 연구한 책입니다. 객관적인 설문 조사 항목 끝에 자유롭게 소견을 적으라고 했는데, 그 소견들 중의 하나가 이 책 제목입니다. 놀라운 것은 비슷한 내용의 소견을 적은 사람들이 꽤 있었다는 것입니다.
보수 기독교인들에 대해 가장 강한 거부감을 가진 그룹은, 백인에다가, 고학력 소유자이고, 부유한 사람들입니다. 말하자면 미국 정치, 경제, 사회 분야에서 권력을 쥐고 있는 사람들입니다.
이들은 보수적인 크리스천들을 비이성적이고, 비합리적이고, 편협하고, 가짜 지도자에게 쉽게 현혹된다고 생각합니다. 시대에 뒤떨어지는 가치관을 고수하고, 개인의 자유를 억압하며, 현대 사회를 봉건적 사회로 회귀시키려 한다고 믿습니다. 그렇기 때문에 기독교인들이 사회에 악영향을 끼치지 못하도록 제압거나, 제어해야 한다고 생각합니다.
미국에서 가장 큰 영향력을 가진 그룹들이 이런 생각들을 갖고 있다면, 기독교 국가라는 미국에서 교회나 기독교인들에게 대한 역차별은 불가피하고, 음성적인 핍박도 점점 더 커지겠다는 생각이 듭니다.
한국에는 아직 이런 연구 결과가 없지만, 기독교인이, ‘위선적 이기집단’으로 인식되고 있는 것 같습니다. 드라마를 보면, 부패한 사장은 장로, 욕심쟁이 시어머니는 권사로 그려지고 있습니다. 이러한 부정적인 인식이 점점 넓게 퍼져 나가면서 기독교인에 대한 매도나 음성적 핍박은 점점 증가할 것이 예견됩니다.
교회와 기독교인이 매도되고 핍박 받는 집단이 된다는 것이, 반드시 나쁜 것이 아닐 수도 있다는 생각도 듭니다. 성도로서의 삶도, 교회의 생존도, 예수님에게 치열하게 매달려야만 가능해지는 상황이 된다면, 초대 교회에서 일어났던 부흥이 다시 일어나지 않을까는 기대감이 생기기 때문입니다.
