¼öÆò Àüµµ/¼öÁ÷ Àüµµ(Horizontal Evangelism, Vertical Evangelism)-¿µ¾î/ÇѱÛ
There are two aspects of evangelism- horizontal and vertical. Horizontal evangelism is preaching the gospel to neighbors. Vertical is passing the gospel on to our children.
We may say Korean churches have been successful in horizontal evangelism. At its peak, 30% of the population of Korea identified as Christian. The church grew so rapidly in a mere 100 years that the global church viewed it as a wonder.
However, the Korean church failed in vertical evangelism. A recent survey showed that a clear majority of teenagers in Korea who belong to church youth groups said they would not attend church once they graduated from high school.
The house church has been more successful in vertical evangelism. Many children stay in church after graduation because there are house churches for different age groups- house churches for children, house churches for youth, and house churches for singles. They learn to share their lives and serve each other through house church. They learn the value of community and move on to the next life stage group after graduation instead of leaving the church.
In light of the current rapid breakdown of traditional morality and the pervasive anti-Christian sentiment in society however, we need to approach the younger generation in more systematic ways to better pass on the faith better.
An easy and effective method is a ¡°family house church meeting,¡± which can be done even in traditional churches.
This is different from the traditional home worship,¡± which was tailored to adults but forced their young children to attend. No wonder it sometimes caused trauma for some Christians who were raised in Christian families.
The focus of family house church is on children, not parents. Here is what a family house church meeting could look like:
1. Order or make food that your children like.
2. Sing a few hymns or praise songs that your children choose.
3. Play a simple game.
4. Take turns sharing three things to be grateful for.
5. Take turns sharing a prayer request.
6. When a family member shares a prayer request, the rest of the family lay their hands on and pray for the person. (Children also pray for their parents in the same way.)
7. The father or the head of the family finishes the meeting with a closing prayer.
There are many wonderful testimonies about these meetings. Parents confessed that they came to know their children s pain and worries for the first time. Children said they began to understand their parents hopes and fears through these meetings.
When children and parents come to understand one another and support each other in prayer, the parents faith will naturally and gradually be passed on to their children.
