하고 싶은데, 안 돼요! (Not Just Enlightenment but Power)-영어/한글
Recently, I watched a program on internet featuring a Buddhist monk who is popular with the general public, especially with young people. The monk taught a lesson then answered questions from the audience. I can understand why he is so popular. His answers were direct and clear.
Some of the things he said were:
“Live your life freely. Don’t worry about problems in advance, but just solve them when they come. Don’t let circumstances limit you.”
“If you make a mistake, just correct it. If you do something wrong, just apologize. If you don t know something, just admit it. When you pretend to know something you don t or insist that something is right when it is wrong, your life becomes stressful.”
“Don t think, but just do what is right. If you do this, you won t have any stress.”
How simple and clear the answers are!
But his answers reminded me of a joke I heard when I was a kid - We can walk on water like Jesus. Just step out with your left foot before your right foot sinks, and step out with your right foot before your left foot sinks.
It s a clear and simple solution. The problem is that you obviously can t step out with your left foot before your right foot sinks.
I agree that if we just do the right thing, we will be able to live a stress-free life. But the problem is that human beings have a sinful nature that prevents us from doing so.
Many philosophers, thinkers, and spiritual gurus have pondered the life’s problems and have offered various solutions. It’s not that we don’t know the solutions but that we are unable to put these solutions into practice because we lack the power to do so.
Such power comes only from Jesus. He died on the cross for the sins of the world and rose again, freeing us from the guilt and power of sin. The Holy Spirit who Jesus sent to dwell in the hearts of believers, gives us the power to overcome sin and live a truly free life.
All religions provide enlightenment or spiritual experiences, but only the gospel gives us the power to live.

젊은이들에게 인기를 끌고 있는 스님이 호스팅하는 프로그램을 보았습니다. 청중을 대상으로 설법을 하고, 질의응답 시간을 갖는 프로그램인데, 이분이 왜 이처럼 인기인지 알 수 있었습니다. 답이 단순하고, 명쾌해서, 속이 시원해지기 때문입니다.
“인생을 자유롭게 사세요. 문제가 있으면 고치면 됩니다. 그러면 부족한 상태에서도 자유롭게 살 수 있습니다.”
“잘못되면 고치세요. 잘못했으면 사과하세요. 모르면 물으세요. 모르면서 아는 척하고, 틀렸는데 안 틀린 척하고, 잘못한 것을 잘했다고 우길 때 괴로움이 생깁니다.”
“해야 한다 라고 생각만 하지 말고 그냥 해보세요. 이런 관점을 가져야 스트레스가 없습니다. 괴로운 이유는 욕심 때문입니다.”
저도 답을 들으면서 속이 시원해졌지만, 동시에 “이분은 삶을 참 쉽게 생각하는구나.”라는 생각이 스쳤습니다. 어릴 적 친구들과 나누었던 농담도 생각났습니다. “우리도 예수님처럼 물 위를 걷을 수 있어. 오른쪽 발이 물에 빠지기 전에 왼쪽 발을 내 딛고, 왼발이 빠지기 전에 다시 오른쪽 발을 내딛으면 돼.” 단순하고 명쾌한 답입니다. 그러나 문제는 한 발이 물에 빠지기 전에 다른 발을 내딛을 수 없다는 것입니다. ^^;
수많은 철학자들, 사상가들, 종교가들이 인생 문제를 갖고 고민했고, 나름대로 답을 제시했습니다. 우리의 문제는, 제시한 답대로 살 수 없다는 것입니다. 바르게 사는 법은 알겠는데, 바르게 살 능력이 없습니다. 자유로운 삶을 살고 싶은데 자유로워질 수가 없습니다. 이웃을 용서하고 사랑하며 살고 싶은데, 그것이 안 됩니다.
인간에게 내재하는 죄성( 罪性) 때문입니다.
예수님은 인생 문제의 답을 주셨을뿐만이 아니라, 답 대로 살 수 있는 능력도 주셨습니다. 십자가에 돌아가셔서 인류의 죄 값을 치르셨고, 부활하시고 승천 하셔서 성령을 보내셨습니다. 이 성령님이 우리 안에 거하시면서 죄를 이기고 바르게 살 수 있는 능력을 주십니다.
모든 종교에는 가르침과 깨달음만 있습니다. 복음에는 능력이 있습니다.
