A pastor who was about to become a senior pastor of a house church asked me what he should do in his new role. The following is the gist of my advice, listed in order of importance:
1. Build trust. Pastoral care is impossible without trust between the pastor and his church members. In order to gain trust, he must be good at the basics of pastoral care such as preaching, Bible study, and counseling. Preaching is especially important. There s a saying that good preachers do not necessarily build growing churches, but pastors who grow churches are all good preachers.
2. Pray. Not only should he pray a lot, but he should ensure that the church members know that he does. If his congregation considers him a praying man, they will trust and follow him. Their trust will be almost absolute if they believe God always listens to his prayers.
3. Work with passion. Church members will be passionate only as much as their pastor is. We often see churches thriving even when their pastors have obvious shortcomings or undesirable characteristics. One thing those pastors have in common is passion for their work. Passion moves people. Church members can overlook their pastor¡¯s shortcomings and meet what may seem like unreasonable demands when they see his passion.
4. Communicate. A pastor should let church members know the direction in which the church is heading and how they are going to get there. He should be transparent about his ministry and his life. The more the church members know about their pastor s personal thoughts, feelings, and things happening in his life, the closer they will feel to him and the more willing they will be to follow him. Some pastors complain that their congregations misunderstand them, but it¡¯s not the congregation¡¯s job to understand their leader. It¡¯s a leader¡¯s job to make his followers understand him.
5. Develop administrative skills. Administrative skill in church ministry is like traffic control in a city. Just as traffic flows smoothly when well directed, the church runs smoothly when administration is done well. Church administration is the pastor¡¯s responsibility, not the church office secretary or the assistant pastor. He should clearly state the goals and define the boundaries of each department s ministry, preventing possible conflicts between departments. He also needs to give the person in charge autonomy so that ministry leaders have a sense of ownership.

Ưº°È÷ ¼³±³¸¦ ÀßÇØ¾ß ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ¼³±³¸¦ Àß ÇÑ´Ù°í ±³È¸°¡ ºÎÈïÇÏ´Â °ÍÀº ¾Æ´ÏÁö¸¸, ºÎÈïÇÏ´Â ±³È¸ ´ãÀÓ ¸ñ»ç´Â ¸ðµÎ ¼³±³¸¦ Àß ÇÏ´õ¶ó´Â ¸»ÀÌ ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù.
µÑ°, ±âµµÇØ¾ß ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ±âµµ¸¦ ¸¹ÀÌ ÇÒ »Ó ¾Æ´Ï¶ó, ±³Àε鿡°Ô ´ãÀÓ ¸ñ»ç°¡ ±âµµÇÏ°í ÀÖ´Ù´Â °ÍÀ» ¾Ë·Á¾ß ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ±âµµÇÏ´Â »ç¶÷À̶ó°í ÀÎÁ¤¹ÞÀ¸¸é, ±³ÀεéÀÌ ½Å·ÚÇÏ°í µû¶óÁÝ´Ï´Ù. ´ãÀÓ ¸ñ»ç ±âµµ¿¡ Çϳª´Ô²²¼­ ¹Ýµå½Ã ±Í ±â¿ïÀ̽ôõ¶ó´Â ÀÎÁ¤±îÁö ¹ÞÀ¸¸é ½Å·Ú¿Í ¼øÁ¾Àº °ÅÀÇ Àý´ëÀûÀÔ´Ï´Ù.
¼Â°, ¿­Á¤ÀûÀ¸·Î ÀÏÇØ¾ß ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ±³ÀεéÀº ¸ñ»ç°¡ ¿­½É³»´Â ¸¸Ä¡ ¿­½ÉÀ» ³À´Ï´Ù. ¾ðÇ൵ °ÅÄ¥°í, ¸ñȸ öÇп¡µµ ¹®Á¦°¡ ÀÖ¾î º¸ÀÌ´Â ¸ñ»çµéÀÌ ±³È¸¸¦ ¼ºÀå½ÃÅ°´Â °ÍÀ» º¸´Â µ¥, À̵鿡°Ô´Â °øÅëÁ¡ÀÌ ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. ¿­Á¤ÀÌ ÀÖ´Ù´Â °ÍÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ¿­Á¤Àº »ç¶÷À» °¨µ¿½Ãŵ´Ï´Ù. ´ãÀÓ ¸ñ»ç¿¡°Ô ¿­Á¤ÀÌ ÀÖÀ¸¸é ±³ÀεéÀÌ À¢¸¸ÇÑ °áÁ¡Àº ´«°¨¾Æ ÁÖ°í, ¹«¸®ÇÑ ¿ä±¸µµ µé¾îÁÝ´Ï´Ù.

´Ù¼¸Â°, ÇàÁ¤·ÂÀ» °³¹ßÇØ¾ß ÇÕ´Ï´Ù. ÇàÁ¤·ÂÀº ±³ÅëÁ¤¸® ÇÏ´Â ´É·ÂÀÔ´Ï´Ù. ±³ÅëÁ¤¸®¸¦ Àß ÇØ¾ß ±³Åë üÁõÀÌ ¾È »ý±â´Â °Íó·³, ÇàÁ¤ÀÌ Àß ÀÌ·ç¾îÁ®¾ß ±³È¸°¡ ¿øÈ°ÇÏ°Ô µ¹¾Æ°©´Ï´Ù. ÇàÁ¤Àº ÀÚµ¿Â÷ÀÇ À±È°À¯¿Í °°Àº ¿ªÇÒÀ» ÇÕ´Ï´Ù.
