I. The Causes of the Church Division
1. The Situation of Mission Field
(1) Conservative Mission
It is no doubt that Korean Church has grown up on the basis of the conservative theology in the early stage of the mission. This is, I think, the reason why Korean Church has been established by the faithful conservative missionaries at that time.
But professor Sung Bum Yoon assumed that a dubious attitude of no understanding whether or not the missionaries who came to Korea in the early days of mission had completely so called the European Orthodoxy (Conservative Fundamentalism) in a strict sense.
He said that it was difficult for him to make a hasty conclusion what kind of faith had been formed since the Presbyterian Church and the Methodist Church had officially come into Korea through Rev. H. G. Underwood and Rev. H. G. Appenzella in 1885.
Also, Professor Dong Sik Yoo asserted that the which was understood and emphasized by the Western missionaries was not the essence of Gospel but the Legalistic ritual of Religion and ethical rule because it has been received on the basis of Confucianism at that time in Korea.
But Professor Yang Sun Kim a theologian of Korean Church History put emphasis on the conclusion that the first missionaries were the most conservative because they heard close resemblance to the Puritan thought in faith, and that Rev. Sun Joo Kil, Young ke who was influenced from the Western missionaries in the theological thought was the most conservative.

I. 교회분열의 원인
1. 피선교적 상황
(1) 보수주의적 선교
한국교회가 선교 초창기부터 보수주의 신학을 바탕으로 성장해 온 것은 의심할 여지가 없다. 이는 한국교회가 극히 보수주의의 선교사들에 의하여 세워졌기 때문이다.
그러나 윤성범 교수는 엄밀할 의미에서 한국에 들어온 초창기의 선교사들이 철두철미하게 소위 구라파에서 말하는 정통주의(보수주의 근본주의)와 같은 것(faith/theology)을 가지고 있었겠느냐 하는 것은 수긍이 가지 않는다고 하여 회의적인 태도를 취하고 있다. 그는 “장로교와 감리교가 언더우드 목사와 아펜셀라 목사에 의하여 1885 한국에 공식적으로 들어온 이래 어떠한 종류의 신앙형태가 형성되었는지 속단하기 어려운 바가 있다”고 했다.
또한, 유동식 교수는 “한국은 당시 유교적 바탕에서 복음을 받아들였기 때문에, 서구 선교사들을 통해 한국에 이해되고 강조된 것은 복음의 본질이 아니라 율법주의적 종교의식과 윤리적 규례였다”고 주장하였다.
그러나 한국교회사 학자 김양선 교수는 최초의 선교사들이 철두철미한 청교도 신앙사상과 방불하였기 때문에 극히 보수적이었으며, 그러므로 이 선교사들의 신학사상의 직접적인 영향을 받았던 영계 길선주 목사 역시도 극히 보수적인 신앙이었음을 두말할 것도 없다고 역설했다. 이것은 최초 선교사들의 신학적인 영향을 강하게 받은 한국교회가 극단의 보수주의 신학사상에 젖어 있었음을 잘 말해주고 있는 것이다. ⛪️⛪️
