[A hard saying to understand] (12) (Who are the sons of God?)
In Genesis 6:2 it is written that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose, and bore their sons, who were called Nephilim, who were the heroes of old, men of renown. (Gen. 6:2, 4). Many theologians have claimed that the descendants were just the great and tall Anakim of Cananites (Deut. 9:2). In this case who are the sons of God? It is no doubt that they are the Sethites who just described in Genesis chapter five as having in their midst “men who walked with God” belonging to Him like Enoch (5:22). But some theologians insist that the sons of God are the angels because the title have ever been used to the angels in the Bible ((Job. 1:6; 2:1; 38:7; Dan. 3:25).
But he claim that the sons of God are the angels is just wrong interpretation of the Bible, because of three reasons as follows: (1) absolute difference between man and angel in nature, that is, man is a body (living soul) with flesh but angel a genuine spirit without flesh, therefore, man could never marriage angel, (2) no man's marriages with angels have been found in the whole scriptures, (3) the contextual difference of the sons of God even though the title has used to angels. In this text Gen. 6:2 we could never find any circumstantial evidence that the sons of God was angels. In conclusion, the sons of God and the daughters of man were both mankind, which were unfortunately lumped together by the son of God without regard to their classification, whether Sethite or Cainite. When God's children lose sight of such basic distinctions and look about only for the pretty face and the shapely forms, then, surely, degeneracy has set in. (H. C. Leupold).

창 6:2에 보면, 하나님의 아들들이 사람의 딸들의 아름다움을 보고 자기들의 좋아하는 모든 자로 아내를 삼고 그들의 자식들을 낳았는데, 그들은 네피림으로 고대의 용사(영웅)요, 유명한 사람들이라고 기록되어 있다(창 6:2, 4). 많은 신학자들이 그 후손(네피림)들을 가나안 족속 중에 장대한 아낙자손이었다고 주장해왔다(신 9:2). 이 경우에 하나님의 아들들은 누구인가? 그들은 “하나님과 동행하는 사람들”로 에녹과 같이 하나님께 속한 사람들 가운데 있었던 창세기 5장에 기록된 셋 족속이라는 사실은 의심할 여지가 없다(Gen. 5:22). 그러나 어떤 신학자들은 하나님의 아들들은 천사들이라고 주장하는데, 그 이유는 하나님의 아들이라는 이름이 성경에서 천사에 대해서도 사용되었기 때문이라고 한다(욥 1:6; 2:1; 38:7; 단 3:25).
그러나 하나님의 아들들이 천사들이라는 주장은 성경을 잘 못 해석한 것이다. 왜냐하면, 다음과 같은 세 가지 이유 때문이다: (1) 인간과 천사는 본질에 있어서 절대적인 차이가 있기 때문인데, 즉 인간은 육체를 가진 몸이나 천사는 육체가 없는 순수한 영이기 때문이며, 그러므로 인간은 결코 천사와 결혼을 할 수 없기 때문이다(마 22:30). (2) 사람이 천사와 결혼했다는 사실을 전 성경에서 발견할 수 없기 때문이다. (3) 비록 하나님의 아들들이라는 이름이 천사들에게 사용된 적이 있다고 할지라도, 하나님의 아들들에 대한 문맥상의 차이가 있다. 본문 창 6:2에서 우리는 결코 하나님의 아들들이 천사들이었다는 어떠한 정황도 발견할 수가 없기 때문이다. 결론적으로 하나님의 아들들과 사람의 딸들 모두 인간이었는데, 불행이도 하나님의 아들들이 셋 족속이든 가나안 족속이든 그들의 구별에 관계없이 한 덩어리로 만들었다는 것이다. 하나님의 자녀들이 이러한 기본적인 구별에 대한 혜안을 상실하고, 단지 아름다운 얼굴과 외모에 눈길을 주다보면, 확실히 퇴폐에 빠지게 된다.
