[A hard saying to understand] (21) ❓❓❓
Rev. Choi: \"in spirit and truth\" “신령과 진정으로”(요 4:24)는 잘 못된 번역입니다. 그러므로 바른 번역으로 이해해야 진정한 예배를 드릴 수 있습니다.
이 문제를 어떻게 생각하십니까?
We should exactly understand John 4:24 \"in spirit and truth\" by the right version in order to have true worship service to God because it has been wrong translation. (cf. the NKRV) What do you think of that?
Paul Jang: Rev. Choi, nice to meet you on my faith-book. For the Bible versions, it is difficult to assert that any version rendered must be only absolute one. Even though I have collated the original text and so many versions, I have only found that all the versions have their strong and weak points together. The Korean Revised Version(KRV) and the New Korean Revised Version(NKRV) are just same as well.
But seeking from the nuance inside the context, there are lots of great differences among the diverse translations, while it is meaningless for us to talk about the differences between their translations. I think that the words of John 4:24 must be regarded as such. They do not mostly have even an indefinite article \"a\" or a definite article \"the\" in the original text and English versions. Of course, the English versions, KNOX and NIV have the article \"the\" following the previous phrase \"the Spirit of God.\" (in the Spirit of God)
But the Greek text “ejn pneuvmati kai; ajlhqeiva/”(en pneumati kai aletheia) has been mostly rendered to \"in spirit and in truth\" in English versions, and to \"신령과 진정으로“ in the Korean Revised Version (KRV), and to \"영과 진리로” in the New Korean Revised Version (NKRV). Problem is that which phrase has to be chosen between \"신령과 진정으로“(in spirit and in truth) and \"영과 진리로”(in spirit and truth)? Even though it has somewhat difference according to individual subjective feeling, it is not significant. It cannot be asserted whether which version is wrong or right. Even though there is some problem, no problem for theological understanding.
(1) In the context, the original text “ejn pneuvmati”(en pneumati) must be related to the Spirit of God because it presupposes the previous phrase “pneu'ma oJ qeov\"”(God is Spirit), and it is true that the subsequent phrase “ajlhqeiva”(aletheia) also must be related to the truth of God because it is truth. But in the grammar, those do not have the article \"τό\" before them but only the preposition \"ejn\", and therefore not the ”ejn τό pneuvmati”(en to pneumati) and “ejn τό ajlhqeiva”(en to aletheia), that is, ”in the spirit\" and ”in the truth\" but the “ejn pneuvmati”(en pneumati), that is, “in spirit\" and “ejn ajlhqeiva”(en aletheia), that is, “in truth\" without the article (with the preposition “in” linking to both “spirit” and “truth”).
Greek original word “ajlhqeiva”(aletheia) means truth, reality, truthfulness, sincerity, honesty, candour, and frankness. It must be used as the adverb phrase with the preposition \"ejn\"(en) only, which does not expresses the ontological noun but an adverb phrase which suggests the nature or the character of behavior.
(2) In the theological significance, I think that it is natural for us to have the worship service to God not in \"the spirit\" which is a noun but \"in spirit\" which is an adverb phrase based on the \"God is Spirit\" which is the ontological expression, and that it is natural to be rendered \"in truth\" which is an adverb phrase in the context and theology rather than the noun \"truth\" which has somewhat problem grammatically (in contrast to appearance).
As \"God is light\" and \"God is love\" which do not mean the being of God Himself but the attributes of God, so that it is further natural to be rendered not as the nouns of being \"spirit\" or \"truth\" but the adverb phrase \"in spirit\" or \"in truth\" which expresses the character. Of course, two versions are acceptable together. In fact, we have to find the original meanings of the words of God (the Bible) in the method of sound theology which arranges the exact principle of the Bible, because it is hardly possible to perfectly interpret the words of God in the human languages.

잘못된 번역이기에 바른 번역으로 이해하여야 진정한 예배를 드릴 수 있습니다. (개역개정판 참조) 이것을 어떻게 생각하십니까?
Paul Jang: 최 목사님 페북에서 만나니 반갑습니다. 성경번역에는 어느 것이나 유아독존식의 절대적이라고 주장하기는 어렵다고 봅니다. 원문(original text)과 수많은 역본들을 대조해보았지만, 모두가 장단점이 있습니다. 한글개역과 개역개정도 마찬가지입니다. 그러나 문맥의 정서(nuance) 속으로 깊이 들어가 보면, 다양한 번역으로 큰 차이가 나는 부분도 있지만, 어떤 부분은 번역 상 차이에 큰 의미가 없는 것들도 있습니다. 요 4:24 말씀이 그렇다고 봅니다. 요 4:24의 원문과 영역에는 대부분 부정관사 \"a\"나 정관사 \"the\"가 없습니다. 물론 KNOX나 NIV와 같이 앞의 \"하나님의 영\"을 이어받아 정관사(the)를 붙인 영역도 있기는 합니다(in the Spirit).
그러나 헬라 원문은 “ejn pneuvmati kai; ajlhqeiva/”(en pneumati kai aletheia)로 영역에서는 대부분 “in sprit and truth”로 되어 있고, 한글개역에서는 “신령과 진정으로” 개역개정에서는 “영과 진리로” 번역되어 있습니다. 문제는 “신령과 진정으로\"와 “영과 진리로” 중에 어느 것을 택하느냐? 인데, 이 부분에서는 개인의 감정들(subjective feelings)에 따라 좀 다르긴 하겠지만 큰 의미가 없다고 봅니다. 둘 중에 어느 것이 “오역이다” “정역이다”라고 고집할 것만은 아닌 것 같습니다. 문법적으로는 약간의 문제는 있으나, 신학적으로 이해하는 데는 별문제가 없습니다.
(1) 본문의 문맥상으로 원문인 “ejn pneuvmati”(en pneumati)는 앞에 나오는 “pneu'ma oJ qeov\"”(하나님은 영이시니)를 전제로 하고 있어서, 하나님의 영에 관련되어 있고, 다음의 “ajlhqeiva”(aletheia)도 “truth\"(진리)로 되어 있기 때문에, 이것도 역시 하나님의 진리(the truth of God)에 관련된 것만은 사실이나, 문법적으로 보면, 앞에 관사 \"τό\"(the)가 없고, 전치사 \"en\"(in)만 붙어있어서, ”ejn τό pneuvmati”(en to pneumati)와 “en τό ajlhqeiva”(en to aletheia)즉 ”in the spirit\"(영으로)와 ”in the truth\"(진리로)가 아니라, 정관사 없이 “ejn pneuvmati”(en pneumati) 즉 “in spirit\"(영으로, 영적으로, 신령으로)와 “en ajlhqeiva”(en aletheia) 즉 “in truth\"(진실로, 진정으로)로 되어(with the preposition “in” linking to both “spirit” and “truth”) 정관사나 부정관사가 없습니다.
헬라어 원어인 “ajlhqeiva”(aletheia)는 truth(진리), reality(실재, 진실성), truthfulness(진실), sincerity(진정성, 성실성), honesty, candour(정직), frankness(솔직)의 뜻으로 사용되는데, 전치사 \"ejn\"(in)만 붙어 있어서 존재론적인 표현인 명사(noun)가 아니라 본성(nature), 또는 특성, 품성(character)의 행동을 나타내는 부사구(adverb phrase)로 되어 있습니다.
(2) 신학적인 의미로 “하나님은 영이시니”에서 하나님에 대한 존재론적 표현인 “하나님은 영이다”에 근거하여, 하나님께 드리는 예배는 명사인 “영”으로가 아니라, 부사구인 “영적으로”라고 하는 것이 자연스럽고, 명사인 “진리”로는 문법상으로 좀 문제가 있고, 오히려 부사구인 “진실로” 혹은 “진정으로”(in truth)가 문맥상으로나 신학적으로 자연스럽다고 봅니다(in contrast to appearance).
예를 들어 “하나님은 빛이시니라”(God is light)나, “하나님은 사랑이시니라”(God is love)라고 해서 \"빛”이나 “사랑”이 하나님의 존재자체가 아니라, 하나님의 속성을 의미하는 것과 같이, 존재의 명사인 “영”나 “진리”가 아니라 성격을 나타내는 부사구 “영적으로”(신령으로)와 “진실로”나 “진정으로” 번역하는 편이 더 자연스럽다고 봅니다. 물론, 두 번역 모두 가능하다고 생각합니다. 사실, 인간의 언어로 하나님의 말씀을 완벽하게 풀어낸다는 것은 불가능하기 때문에 정확한 성경원리를 잘 정리한 건전한 신학적 방법으로 성경말씀의 본뜻을 찾아내야 합니다.
