7. Seeking First the Future of God

The kingdom of God tells us where to focus out energies; it gives us our priorities. Both the present and the future aspects of the kingdom motivate us to live as joyous subject in God's realm.

The indwelling Spirit and the nearness of God's judgement are what determine our lifestyle. Paul sums up the first aspect in Romans 14:27: \\"The kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.\\"

(1) The Church's Goals

(1) The Andrew Kirk has summarized the three main purposes of the church, and he fears that unless bold action is taken, these distinctives of God's people will be lost.

1) The Kingdom of Itself: the church exhibiting the values of the kingdom in the world ad the visible expression of the character of God. Therefore she must praise to God with glory.

2) The Obligation to Declare the Gospel: the church has the obligation to declare the good news throughout the entire world. God has given his people the task of world evangelization, and our efforts must concentrate on fulfilling that task with the utmost urgency.

3) The Responsibility to serve the Poor: the church has the responsibility to serve the poor and suffering. To include this third item ad a priority for the churches' agenda is note to create a tension between evangelism and social action.

(2) Pannell goes on to emphasize that such a concern for the oppresses is not a matter for just some people or some church agencies, or as a means to be relevant in modern society.

(3) It is a matter of the church's basic allegiance being worked out in the relationships and priorities of every day life, because the church's call to selfless service is part of the original vocation of God's people.

(4) It is the divine initiative in time and in history to offer a radical alternative to the oppression of the times.
