CRITIQUE ON THE UNIFICATION CHURCH
The Unification Church referred to as the Moonies, was one of the most vicious and feared religious Cult. The Unification Church is not Christianity as Muslim and Mormonism. Considering the background of arising the Unification Church, we must be back to historical settings of those days in Korea.
During Japanese occupation of Korea and after Japan's defeat in World War Il there was the combination of postwar chaos and the removal of these restrictions, which provided the context for a sudden spurt of religious innovation in terms of doctrines and organizations.
Consequently Korean society saw the rapid emergence of number of groups that featured charismatic founders wish messianic or prophetic claims and syncretic blends of Confucian, folk, shamanism, Buddhism, and Christian traditions. Of those the Unification Church, like many other new religious movements springing up, met a need in society at a time when the country was in the grips of a serious economic depression, and when the forces of communism and anticommunism were beginning to polarize the masses.
The doctrine of the Unification Church has depended upon their text. Divine Principle of which it is totally different from the Christianity, rather indebted to 19th and 20th-century liberal theologians.
Although the Divine Principle is based largely on the Bible, the Bible itself is not seen as God's final, infallible revelation of truth. The writer is going to state a crucial problem of which he have had, and then he will talk about their doctrine that has been written in the Divine Principle.
First of all, they have a big problem of sexual morality inferred from divorce of the founder, Sun Myung Moon. This also must be connected to the principle of pikarume(a ritual of cleansing of the blood).
The Writer is going to criticize the doctrine of the Divine Principle of the Unification Church analyizing the Creation, the Fall, and the Restoration in the Text.
I. Theory of the Creation
The creation of the Unification Church is no more than dialectic methodology of Hegelian historical Philosophy. God is not Being as a transcendental personal One so much as Becoming as a process of formation.
God is a Neutral One in relation with whole things in the ontological principle of the physiognomy. So to speak. God has both masculine and feminine qualities based on the universal fact of polarity and the Biblical record.
The doctrine of creation, I think, must derive from the science of divination ( the Book of Change: a Chinese classic on divination). In the Book of Change the root of universe is the Great Absolute, and the male and female comes from the Great Absolute, the Five Elements(metal, tree, water, fire, soil) come from the male and female, and all things(all creation) come from the Five Elements.
And the male and female is called the Way, namely Word. Therefore the Unification Church asserts that the Great Absolute is the same as the Word of God in itself. But the characteristic of existence of God never been apart from relationship with the creature because it has neutralization.
In this sense the existence can not be absolute but relative. Thus God is a force of all things in the universe, and all things come into being through the Give and Receive Operation. The doctrine of the Unification Church has a tendency to decline from pantheism to deism. And we can find mysticism and existentialism from that.
Teaching of God as a Neutral Subject of two nature physiognomy same as male and female contains a sexual motif. God exists in polarity a husband and wife can reflect more fully God's dual essentialities.
II. Theory of the Fall
The Unification theology explains that process of the creation relies on the Give and Receive Operation, and process of the Fall sexual relations like that. Unification theology teaches that there were actually two falls the spiritual fall and the physical fall.
The spiritual fall occurred when Eve had sexual relations with Lucifer in the Garden. The spiritual fall was followed by physical fall. Any way as Satan had polluted Eve, Eve polluted Adam and both at that moment lost their status as God's children and became servants of Satan, the fallen Lucifer. And also Eve gave birth to Cain thru her sexual relationship with Lucifer; she gave birth to Abel thru her relationship with Adam.
The physical fall was not an inevitable result of the spiritual fall. If Adam had resisted Eve's temptation, the entire picture would have changed. God would still have been able to work through Adam to restore Eve or create another woman to take her place. But as a result of the physical fall, original sin is transmitted to all of Adam's descendants and can only be moved when the Messiah comes to restore man's original lineage as a child of God. Back to the Garden of Eden, what is the tree of life?
The tree of life is a musculine completing the idea of creation. The tree of knowledge of good and evil is a symbol completing the idea of creation likewise. Then what is the serpent? that is a spiritual creature. And what is the fall of angel? His fall related to sexual intercourse with Eve. In other words it is not to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil but adultery transgression.
But it might be try to rationalize their rite of Pikarume(cleansing of the blood) come from Moon's mixing sex doctrine. Let us criticize this doctrine in the light of the Scriptures.
First of all, It is impossible to intercourse between angel and woman because angels must not marry(Matt.22:30).
Secondly, the angel's fall was caused by his pride(I Tim.3:6).
Thirdly, the angel's fall was caused by leaving their own habitation(Jud.1:6).
And Eve's fall also is not because of her sexual transgression but because of her pride(Gen.3:5).
III. Theory of the restoration
Man can not go to the way of the tree of life for himself because God has prohibited the way using cherubim and a flaming sword(Gen.3:24). And since coming of Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost man return to Lord Jesus the tree of life, but it is not complete restoration, it is no more than spiritual grafting but not physical one.
Therefore it is necessary to graft physical body. In the principle of the restoration there is an indissoluble connection between the tree of life(Gen.2:9) and the tree of life(Rev.22:14).
In this context Jesus is the last Adam(I Cor.15:45). Jesus, however, could not accomplish the purpose of the providence of physical salvation because his body was invaded by Satan. However he could establish the basis for spiritual salvation...through the redemption by the blood of the cross.
But the Unification theology fits the focus to not Jesus Christ so much as the Lord of the Second Advent-Sun Myung Moon, its founder. All the people can be redeemed through the rite of pikarume of Moon, the Messiah. However it is important to understand that the Messiah according to Unification doctrine is more than and a mere man who brings unity and God's love to this age. We seem to see the heretic Gnosis confusing the Primitive Christianity, and Pelagianism emphasizing the effort and deed of man for salvation.
IV. Conclusion
As stated above the Unification Church must not Christianity a new heretic Movement in Christianity. It is a vicious feared Cult out of Korea to....
