3. Athanasian Creed
(1) The Athanasian Creed has not been written by Athanasius. It was attributed to him from the seventh century, probably because he was the father of the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity.
(2) The evidence seems to indicate that it was written around the year 500 in the south of Gaul (France). It is often know as the Quicumque Vult, the opening words in the original Latin.
(3) In the earliest times it was used as a test of the Orthodoxy of the clergy and as a simple compendium of Catholic doctrine for instructing the laity.
(4) By the thirteenth century it had come to be seen, in the West, as one of the 'three creeds' together with the 'Nicene and Apostles' Creed.
(5) The Creed consisted of two sections; (1) on the Trinity, (2) on the person of Jesus Christ, stating the necessity to believe it if one is to be saved.
