3. The Synonymous Use of Words (´Ü¾îµéÀÇ µ¿ÀǾîÀû »ç¿ë) (p. 71)

Every language contains both antonyms and synonyms. Synonymous words are those that have the same meaning, or agree in one or more of their meanings, though they may differ in others. (¸ðµç ¾ð¾î´Â ¹ÝÀǾî¿Í µ¿ÀǾ °¡Áö°í ÀÖ´Ù. µ¿ÀǾîµéÀº °°Àº ¶æÀ» °¡Áö°í ÀÖ´Â °ÍÀ̰ųª, ȤÀº ±×µéÀÌ ´Ù¸¥ °Íµé¿¡¼­´Â ºñ·Ï ´Ù¸¦ ¼öµµ ÀÖÁö¸¸ ±×µéÀÇ Àǹ̵é ÁßÀÌ Çϳª ȤÀº ±× ÀÌ»óÀÇ ¶æÀ» °¡Áö°í ÀÖ´Â °ÍÀÌ´Ù).

(1) The importance of noting carefully the exact meaning of synonymous words may be illustrated by a few examples:

\"He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him\"

¨ç ¡°¸ð¾ç¡° (ra't)

\"form\" or \"appearance\" added the idea of \"beauty, and therefore refers to a beautiful bodily form. (1Sam. 16:18)

¨è ¡°Ç³Ã¤¡± (rd;h;)

¡°majesty\" or \"comeliness\"(beautifulness/Áؼö) designates an ornament, and, as applied to God, is descriptive of majesty.

¨é ¡°¾Æ¸§´Ù¿î °Í¡° (ha,r]m)

¡±beauty\" derived from \"האָꙜ\" (to see), sometimes refers to an external appearance which is the expression of and therefore in harmony with an inner essential being.
The meaning of the prophet seems to be that the external appearance of the Lord was not such as the Jews expected the Messiah.

(2) The New Testament furnishes a beautiful example about the synonymous use of words in John 21:15-17. (½Å¾àÀº ¿ä 21:15-17¿¡ ÀÖ´Â ´Ü¾îµéÀÇ µ¿ÀǾîÀûÀÎ ¿ë¹ý¿¡ °üÇÑ ÈǸ¢ÇÑ ¿¹¸¦ Á¦°øÇØÁØ´Ù)

The root \"ajgapa¥ø\" expresses a more reasoning attachment of choice and selection, from a seeing in the object upon which it is bestowed that which is worthy of regard; or else from a sense that such is due toward the person so regarded, as being a benefactor, or the like. ¨é Besides word \"love\" has two different Greek words, \"ἔ¥ñ¥øς\" which means the love between male and female, and \"¥ò¥ó¥ø¥ñ¥ãὴ\" which means the love of the same race. Synonymous words always have a general, as well as a special distinctive signification; and the expositor should not proceed on the principle that, whenever such words are employed, their distinctive meaning should always be emphasized, for, if he does, he is liable to find himself entangled in all kinds of fanciful interpretation.
