3. The Synonymous Use of Words (단어들의 동의어적 사용) (p. 71)
Every language contains both antonyms and synonyms. Synonymous words are those that have the same meaning, or agree in one or more of their meanings, though they may differ in others. (모든 언어는 반의어와 동의어를 가지고 있다. 동의어들은 같은 뜻을 가지고 있는 것이거나, 혹은 그들이 다른 것들에서는 비록 다를 수도 있지만 그들의 의미들 중이 하나 혹은 그 이상의 뜻을 가지고 있는 것이다).
They often agree in their fundamental significations, but give expression to different shades of it. (references: Girdlestone's Old Testament Synonyms, Kennedy's Hebrew Synonyms, Trench's New Testament Synonyms, Gremer's Biblisch-Theologisches Wörterbuch).
(1) The importance of noting carefully the exact meaning of synonymous words may be illustrated by a few examples:

① “모양“ (ra't)
\"form\" or \"appearance\" added the idea of \"beauty, and therefore refers to a beautiful bodily form. (1Sam. 16:18)
② “풍채” (rd;h;)
“majesty\" or \"comeliness\"(beautifulness/준수) designates an ornament, and, as applied to God, is descriptive of majesty.
③ “아름다운 것“ (ha,r]m)
”beauty\" derived from \"האָꙜ\" (to see), sometimes refers to an external appearance which is the expression of and therefore in harmony with an inner essential being.
The meaning of the prophet seems to be that the external appearance of the Lord was not such as the Jews expected the Messiah.
(2) The New Testament furnishes a beautiful example about the synonymous use of words in John 21:15-17. (신약은 요 21:15-17에 있는 단어들의 동의어적인 용법에 관한 훌륭한 예를 제공해준다)

① “아가페 사랑“ (ajgapa'/\")
The root \"ajgapaω\" expresses a more reasoning attachment of choice and selection, from a seeing in the object upon which it is bestowed that which is worthy of regard; or else from a sense that such is due toward the person so regarded, as being a benefactor, or the like. (어근인 아가파오는 선택의 사랑으로 보다 이성적인 애정을 나타내는 것으로, 존경의 가치가 있거나, 혹은 이러한 것이 은인에게 합당하다는, 혹은 그와 같은 감정으로부터 오는 것이다)
This based upon admiration and respect, is a love that is controlled by the will and of an enduring character. In particular, applied to the love of God. (이것은 경애와 존경에 기초한 것으로, 의지와 오래 참는 인내로 통제되는 사랑이다. 특히 하나님의 사랑에 적용하였다).
② “필레오 사랑“ (filew, filw, futurity)
The root \"fίlεw\" without being necessarily an unreasoning attachment, does yet give less account of itself to itself; is more instinctive, is more of the feelings or natural affections, implies more passion.\" (어근 필레오는 반드시 불합리한 애정은 아니지만, 감각이나 자연적인 애정 이상으로 보다 열정적이다)
This based on affection, is a love that is more impulsive and apt to lose its fervor. (이것은 애정에 기초한 것으로, 보다 충동적이고 그 열정을 잃어버리기 쉬운 사랑이다).
③ Besides word \"love\" has two different Greek words, \"ἔρως\" which means the love between male and female, and \"στωργὴ\" which means the love of the same race. (그 외의 단어인 “사랑”에는 두 개의 다른 헬라어들 즉 남성과 여성 사이에 사랑을 의미하는 “에로스”와 동족의 사랑을 의미하는 “스톨게”가 있다.
As matter of fact, an interesting field of study opens up for the fascinating, but it may also become dangerous. (사실, 이러한 동의어의 연구가 흥미롭기도 하지만, 또한 위험할 수도 있다)
Synonymous words always have a general, as well as a special distinctive signification; and the expositor should not proceed on the principle that, whenever such words are employed, their distinctive meaning should always be emphasized, for, if he does, he is liable to find himself entangled in all kinds of fanciful interpretation. If two or more synonymous words or expressions are found in the same passage, it is generally safe to assume that their special signification requires attention. (만일 두 개 이상의 동의어들이나 표현들이 같은 구절에서 발견된다면, 보통 그들의 특별한 의미가 무엇인지를 확인하는 것이 안전하다)
