하나님 설득할 필요 없다 (You Don’t Need to Persuade God)-영어/한글
I spend most of my early morning prayer hours in intercession. When I was pastoring Seoul Baptist Church, I prayed for our church members and their families, about 1000 people. Now that I am retired, I pray for house church pastors and their wives, about 400 people. They are called the 153 Prayer Partners.
The 153 prayer partners’ prayer requests are mostly concerned with their ministry but frequently include health issues as well. I was surprised to find almost all pastors’ families have at least one health issue.
When I saw that some were in desperate situations, I begged and pleaded with God to help them. But I recently came to the realization that my attitude was wrong. I was unconsciously thinking that God would not act unless I persuaded him to action. I felt like I needed to inform God of their difficult situations so that He would reluctantly take pity and help them.
It’s obviously a flawed understanding of God because while I know partly of people’s desperate situations, God knows them fully. My compassion for them is superficial, but God’s compassion is unbound.
After this realization I decided to pray differently. Now when I pray for others, I remind myself that God understands their situations much more than I do and is eager to help them. He wants me to pray, but only because He determined that He acts only as response to prayer.

저는 새벽의 기도 시간의 대부분을 중보기도로 사용합니다. 휴스턴 서울교회를 담임할 때에는 약 1,000명 되는 청장년 교인들과 그들의 자녀들을 위해 기도했고, 은퇴 후에는 약 400명의 가정교회 목회자, 사모님들과 (123 기도 요원) 그들의 자녀들을 위해서 기도하고 있습니다.(물론 매번 모두를 위해 기도하는 것이 아니고 돌아가며 합니다. ^^;)
목사님과 사모님이 제출한 153 기도 제목에는 건강 문제가 빠지지 않습니다. 나이에 상관 없이 목회자 가정마다 건강 문제를 한 가지씩은 안고 있는 것 같습니다. 그래서 제가 건강한 것이 미안하게 느껴질 때가 있습니다. ^^;
안타까운 마음으로 중보 기도를 드리다 보면, 치유해 달라고 하나님께 떼를 쓰게 됩니다. 그런데 얼마 전부터 이런 자세로 기도하는 것이 잘못된 것이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 하나님께서 상황을 모르고 계시기 때문에 깨우쳐 드려야 하는 것처럼, 하나님은 원치 않는데 억지로 하시도록 만들어야 하는 것처럼, 하나님을 설득하지 않으면 안되는 것처럼, 기도하는 것이 합당치 않다는 생각이 들었습니다.
그래서 중보 기도하는 마음 가짐을 바꾸기로 했습니다. 하나님께서는 이미 이들의 사정을 속속들이 알고 계시고, 이들을 돕기를 원하시지만, 자녀들의 기도를 통해 일하시기로 결심하셨기 때문에 내게 기도를 시키고 계시다는 것을 자신에게 상기시키며 기도합니다.
