인간 관계에도 부도가 있다 (Default on Human Relationship)-영어/한글
I read an article that likened doing business to keeping a balanced bank account. When I do someone a favor, it’s making a deposit. When someone does me a favor, it’s a withdrawal. The author says that in order to succeed in business, the account must always stay balanced.
I think this principle applies to pastoral ministry as well. In ministry, the pastor’s sacrifice is a deposit into the church body and the church members’ sacrifice is a withdrawal. If the withdrawal exceeds the deposit, the pastor’s ministry may be shipwrecked.
The pastor’s sacrifice builds trust amongst the church members. If a pastor wants to launch a project that requires the church members’ dedication and sacrifice, he must do so only after he has built enough trust.
Implementing the house church system requires a huge sacrifice from church members. Meeting every weekend, opening their homes and preparing food for their meetings takes commitment and sacrifice. However, I was able to do it at Seoul Baptist Church without too much difficulty because I had made a significant deposit prior.
I did many things that church members considered sacrifice. They appreciated the fact that I moved from a bigger church to a smaller church, moved from an area where there was a large Korean-American population to a smaller one in Houston, left behind beautiful California weather for humid Texas weather and voluntarily accepted a salary cut to come to Houston. This was the reason I was able to implement the House Church without a hitch after only 9 months of preparation.
In addition to sacrifice, doing everyday ministry well also builds deposits. Preaching, teaching, prayer and visitation also builds trust within the church. It will help pastors greatly to remember this deposit-withdrawal principle when they start a new program or launch a new project.

사회생활에서 성공하는 법을 은행 계좌 예금과 인출에 비교한 책을 읽었습니다. 저자는, 상대방에게 호의를 베푸는 것이 예금이고, 상대방의 호의를 받는 것이 인출이라고 말합니다. 충분한 예금을 해 놓지 않고, 인출하면 문제가 생기듯이, 사회생활에서도 충분히 예금을 하지 않고 과다 인출을 하면 문제가 생긴다고 합니다.
이 원리는 목회에도 적용이 되지 않을까 싶습니다. 목회자에게 예금은 교인들을 위해 희생을 보이는 것이고, 인출은 목회자가 성도들에게 희생을 요구하는 것입니다. 목회자가 희생을 통해 예금을 충분히 쌓아 놓지 않고 성도들에게 헌신을 요구하는 것은, 은행 계좌에서 예금보다 더 많이 인출한 것과 마찬가지로서 목회에 파탄을 불러올 수 있습니다.
저는 14년 된 전통적인 휴스턴서울교회에 3대 목사로 부임해서, 9개월만에 별 어려움 없이 가정교회를 출범시킬 수 있었습니다. 그 이유는 희생을 통해 미리 예금을 많이 해놓았기 때문입니다. 살기 좋은 캘리포니아를 버리고 무더운 휴스턴으로 온 것을 교인들은 희생으로 간주해 주었습니다. 큰 교회를 버리고 작은 교회로 온 것, 한인이 많은 지역을 버리고 한인이 적은 도시로 온 것, 이전보다 더 적은 사례비를 감수한 것을 고마워했습니다. 그랬기 때문에 가정교회가 매주일, 가정에서, 밥을 같이 먹는 헌신을 요구했지만 순순히 따라와 주었습니다.
희생 외에 예금을 쌓는 또 하나의 방법은 일상적인 목회 활동 즉, 설교, 기도 심방, 성경 공부 등을 잘 하는 것입니다. 이러한 것이 교인들에게 신뢰감을 심어주고, 이러한 신뢰감이 예금이 됩니다. 새로 부임한 목회자들은, 새로운 프로그램을 시작하기 전에 일상적인 목회 활동을 잘 해서 신뢰를 충분히 쌓아야 합니다. 이러지 않고 헌신과 희생이 요구되는 프로그램을 시작하는 것은, 예금액이 충분치 않은데 인출을 하는 것과 같아서, 부도가 날 수 있습니다.
