George Barna, the founder of the Barna Group, lamented that only 30% of pastors in the US demonstrate pastoral leadership, even though their position requires it.
Is leadership something you are born with or something you learn as you grow up? There are children who are ring leaders amongst their peers who don’t necessarily become leaders as adults, whereas many who were shy and quiet children later hold leadership positions when they grow up. So it seems inaccurate to say leadership is something one is born with.
If it’s not by nature, then it must be nurture. This means people can become effective leaders by studying leadership and practicing what they learn.
The best way to become a good leader is to pick a leader you admire and try to emulate them. I recommend Jesus Christ! He is the greatest leader of all, changing countless lives and the course of humanity. His leadership was based on servanthood and sacrifice. Some may feel these are qualities for followers, not leaders, but imitating these characteristics give leaders authority, and many will faithfully follow.
The House Church is still far from being the ideal Biblical church, but the servant leadership of Jesus seems to have taken deep root as we witness house church pastors and members eagerly serving one another.

리더십은 갖고 태어나는가, 개발해 가는 것인가? 어릴 적에 어깨 노릇을 하는 친구들을 보면 리더십을 타고 난 것처럼 보이기도 하지만 이들이 성장한 후에 리더의 삶을 살지 못하고, 거꾸로 내성적이고 소심해 보였던 친구가 장성한 후에 탁월한 리더가 되는 것을 보면, 리더십은 갖고 태어나는 것이라고 말하기는 어려울 것 같습니다.
타고 나는 것이 아니라면, 배우고 개발하는 것입니다. 그렇다면 리더십에 관한 책을 많이 읽고, 세미나에 자주 참석하고, 배운 것을 열심히 실천한다면 좋은 리더가 될 수 있다고 생각합니다.
그러나 리더가 되는 최선의 방법은 좋은 리더를 선택하여 본받는 것이라고 생각합니다. 그리고 본받을 리더를 찾는다면, 예수님이 최선의 선택이라고 생각합니다. 예수님은 시대와 지역을 초월하여 수많은 사람들이 목숨바쳐 충성케 만드는 리더 중의 리더이기 때문입니다.
예수님의 리더십은 섬김과 희생의 리더십입니다. 세상에서는 이 두 가지를 팔로워의 미덕이라고 생각할지 모르지만, 아닙니다. 진정한 리더의 속성입니다. 섬김과 희생이 영적 권위을 부여해주고, 많은 사람들이 좇게 만듭니다.
가정교회의 4가지 원칙을 대표하는 ‘가정교회 4 기둥’ 중, 네번째가 섬김의 리더십입니다. 가정교회에 이것만은 확실하게 자리잡은 것 같습니다. 가정교회 안에서 세상적으로 스펙이 좋은 사람들보다는 섬기는 사람들이 리더로 부상하는 것을 보면 말입니다.
