Some people ask why Christians study the commands and regulations in the Old Testament that are not relevant to us who live in the New Testament era. Others raise a question why we should read the history of Israelites in the OT.
We do it in order to know God.
We can tell what kind of a father a man is by how he responds to his children to do or not to do. For instance, when a father harshly scolded his son for not having gotten even when his son came home crying with a bleeding nose, we can tell he is an aggressive, even a violent man. But if we heard that another father in a similar situation told his son to forgive and forget, we can tell he is a kind, compassionate man. Likewise, through God¡¯s commands, we learn about God¡¯s character and know God.
We also learn about someone¡¯s character and personality through stories. For example, my grandmother didn¡¯t turn away beggars during the Korean War, even when food was scarce. She sometimes even prepared extra food for them. From this story you can get a better picture of her than simply saying ¡°She was a loving, Godly woman¡±. The main character of the Jewish history is God, not Israelites. We learn about God through His involvement in the Jewish history.
Through the Prophets we learn about God¡¯s love, anger, grief. Through Wisdom Writings, we learn how to praise, give thanks, even complain to God.
We read the OT to know God and understand His mind.
