주일 설교 딱 한 번만 하는 이유(Less Is Sometimes Better Than More)-영어/한글
In most Korean churches, pastors preach 5 to 10 times a week because there are so many services. I, however, tried to preach only on Sundays when I pastored Seoul Baptist Church. I felt that if I preached too often, my messages would become banal to the congregation and lose effectiveness.
I wanted my messages to help the members of the congregation change their lives. I felt like the best way to accomplish that goal was to be like a boxer who lands one knockout punch rather than throwing a lot of unproductive jabs. I wanted to put all my effort into one Sunday sermon so that it would powerfully impact my congregation and lead them to commitment and dedication.
I think a fallacy many pastors believe is that the more they speak, the holier their congregation will become. In reality, delivering too many messages may make them trite and ineffectual at bringing about the changes that the pastor desires.
Another fallacy believed by many pastors is that putting more information into a sermon will help their members more. But cramming too much information into one sermon usually dilutes the message, often resulting in the congregation not remembering anything at all.
Too many sermons can be as bad as or worse than too few sermons. Putting too much information into a sermon can make it worse rather than better.

저는 담임 목회를 할 때 설교를 너무 자주 하지 않도록 노력하였습니다. 주중 새벽 기도 시간에는 설교 없이, 제가 강단에서 5시부터 8시까지 기도하고, 교인들은 편한 시간에 나와서 기도하고 돌아 가도록 했습니다. 새벽 예배가 토요일에 딱 한 번 있었는데, 이때에는 교역자들과 안수 집사님들이 돌려가면서 간증 설교를 하도록 했습니다. 수요 저녁 기도회 때는 설교 대신에 구원 간증, 침례 간증, 사역 간증, 선교 간증을 통해 은혜를 받도록 했습니다.
그리고 저는 주일 설교 하나에 집중했습니다(1, 2, 3부). 주일 설교의 임팩트를 극대화하기 위해서였습니다. 담임 목사가 설교를 많이 하면 면역성이 생겨서 성도들의 결신과 결단을 끌어내기 어렵습니다. 권투 경기에서 많은 잽을 날리는 것보다 한 방의 케이오 펀치를 날려 승리하는 것처럼 , 땀 흘려 한 편의 설교를 준비하여, 심혈을 기울여 전하는 것이 효과적입니다. 주일 예배 때마다 결신과 헌신하는 사람들이 많았던 것은 이렇게 한 결과가 아닌가 생각합니다.
저는 외부 부흥집회를 인도할 때에도 설교를 딱 4번만 합니다. 짧은 기간 안에 설교를 너무 많이 하면, 청중들이 먼저 설교에서 들은 내용을 나중 설교를 들을 때쯤이면 다 잊어버립니다. 설교 직전에 금식하며 정성을 쏟아 딱 4번만 설교할 때, 마지막 설교 후에 교인들 거의 모두가 헌신하는 것을 경험합니다.
목회자들이 말을 많이 하면 성도들의 더 많이 은혜를 받으리라는 착각에서 벗어나면 좋겠습니다. 너무나 긴 설교, 너무나 잦은 설교는 교인들에게 변화를 가져오는데 오히려 방해가 될 수 있다는 것을 깨달으면 좋겠습니다.
과다 정보는 과소 정보보다 더 나쁠 수 있습니다.
