1. The Special Idioms and Figures of Thought (Berkhof p. 88)
(특별한 숙어와 사상의 비유적 표현)
Every language has certain characteristic expression, called idioms.
(모든 언어는 숙어라고 부르는 어떤 특징적인 표현을 가지고 있다.
(1) The Hebrew language forms no exception to the rule, and some of its idioms are carried over into the New Testament. (히브리어에도 예외 없이 그러한 규칙이 있으며, 그 숙어들이 신약에도 유입되었다.
(2) There is a frequent use of the hendiadys.
(성경에는 종종 중복법이 사용되고 있다)
1) Thus we read in I Sam. 2 :3: \\"Thou shalt not multiply, thou shalt not speak.\\" (말을 다시 하지 말 것이며)
2) This evidently means, thou shalt not multiply words. In his defense before the Sanhedrm, Paul says: \\" . . . of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question\\" (Acts 23 :6). (바울이...공회에서 외쳐 가로되...죽은 자의 소망 곧 부활을 인하여 (행 23:6)
3) The meaning is, \\"of the hope of the resurrection...\\" Then, too, a noun in the genitive often takes the place of an adjective.
4) Moses urges the objection to his commission that he is not \\"a man of words,\\" (말에 능한 사람) i.e., an eloquent man (Ex. 4:10).
5) And Paul, in writing to the Thessalonians, speaks of their \\"patience of hope,\\" (소망의 인내) when he means their patient hope, hope characterized by patience.
6) Furthermore, when in the Old Testament the words lo' kol (אל לꗔ) are written together, they must be rendered, not all; but when they are separated by intervening words, they should be translated, none, nothing.
(더우기 구약성경에서 אל לꗔ 이라는 단어들이 함께 쓰여졌을 경우에, 그 뜻은 “not all”(모두 아니다)로 번역되어야 하나, 다른 단어들이 끼어들어서 서로 분이되어 사용될 경우에는 “none, nothing”(아무도, 아무것도)라고 번역되어야 한다).
7) It would be a serious mistake to render Ps. 143 :2, \\"Not every living one shall be justified in thy sight,\\"
(주의 목전에는 의로운 인생이 하나도 없나이다) though this would be a literal translation.
8) The evident meaning is, \\"No man living shall be justified in thy sight.\\" (주의 목전에는 의로운 인생이 하나도 없나이다).
Cf. also Ps. 103 :2. Similar cases are found in the New Testament. Cf. Matt. 24^2; Mark 13 :20; Luke 1:37; John 3:15,16; 6:39; 12:46; Rom. 3:20; I Cor. 1:29; Gal. 2:16; I John 2:21; Rev. 18:22.
(3) There are also several kinds of figures of thought that deserve special attention. (사상에 대한 비유들)
