Strategies for Cell Group ( Training Leaders)

Training Leaders

Leadership is the most important element in the small/cell group operation. Without leadership a small/cell group is doomed because a leader leads the small/cell group as if a captain steers the ship. Therefore leadership for small/cell groups must be needed.

Leaders must be trained to lead his small group (Eims 1978, 143). Ron Nicholas explained to use metaphor as follows:

Good leadership unlocks a small group's potential. A good music conductor guides the orchestra into producing harmony. A football quarterback coordinates the team with a specific play to score a touchdown. So the leader of a small group helps members clarify their purpose and reach it. With a good leader people will take off their masks and find the freedom to give and receive love (Nicholas et. al. 1985, 38).

A small/cell group needs a good leader. But there is no perfect group leader in Christianity as well as in human society. The only perfect group leader was Jesus Christ, but he was not merely a man but also God. God does not expect human leaders to be perfect in leadership. He wants human leaders to exercise ongoing training to possess better leadership. What then is leadership? Peter C. Wagner defined it as follows:

The gift of leadership is the special ability that gives to certain members of the Body of Christ to set goals in accordance with God's purpose for the future, and to communicate these goals to others in such a way that they voluntarily and harmoniously work together to accomplish these goals for the glory of God (Wagner, 1984, 88).

Neal F. McBride defined it that the small group leader is the person appointed and recognized to serve the group by enabling the members to achieve their purpose for being a group (McBride 1993, 31). Strong leadership must produce successful church growth. A strong leader can grow a local church. A church needs therefore a stong leader. a small/cell group needs a strong leader likewise.

Where does the strong leader come from? Is leader born or made? The answer to this question is very difficult because of difficulty to explain it with a word. Leadership is a spiritual gift of God. Nevertheless it is good to more emphasize made-up leader than born leader because his leadership skills can be developed.

Walter A. Henrichsen insisted that discipler is not produced but made (Henrichsen, trans. by Korea NavPress 1989, 108). Leaders learn to be leaders (Engstrom 1976, 121). Peter C. Wagner insisted that leadership is earned, discerned, and learned (Wagner 1984, 103-105). David Watson insisted that A spiritual leader as a disciple must not be born but be made (Watson, trans. by Kwon 1987, 87).

What and how to train the small/cell group leaders? The best way of training leaders is to follow Jesus' training spirit and method. As a matter of fact, the focus of the training of small group is not an idea, not a knowledge, not a method, not a curriulum, but a personality of Jesus as if the pastor must preach not the knowlege of Jesus Christ but Himself (Jesus). He was a teacher, a text, a curriculum, and all of the trainings (Icenogle 1994, 200).

Jesus taught the Twelve Disciples not a knowledge of Messiah (Christ) but Himself. He didn't have a text, a tool for teaching and a curriculum, but only Himself. He called personally His disciples, "Follow me." He met His dsciples face to face, and walked with them into the real world. He taught them the Kingdom of God identified with Himself using the real world. He taught not a knolwedge but a real personality (Icenogle 1994, 200). This is practical education and training.

Small/cell group leaders must be trained by being in real group situation but not in classroom situation. Small group leaders should be trained in learning the words of God as the source for their content, purpose and directoin to go. They must be guided by the Holy Spirit for good training.

Ron Nicholas suggested ten skills of a small group leader:

(1) listening others,

(2) asking questions,

(3) improving participating in the studies,

(4) familiarizing with them,

(5) communicating care for them,

(6) reflecting openness,

(7) the ongoing life involvement,

(8) solving problems,

(9) being prepared for the meetings, and

(10) developing and training future leaders (Nicholas et. al. 1985, 46-49).

These skills may be summarized into four categories:

(1) listening them,

(2) solving their problems,

(3) guiding their lives, and (4) training as the future leaders. This means not only training themselves but also training others as leaders preparing for divided groups.

In conclusion, good small/cell group leaders must be trained according to the training method of Jesus Christ in the classroom, and then extended and applied to Chrisitian life and lay ministry fields. It is important to make each potential home Bible study group member aware that if they decide to become a member of the group they should also be committed to be a part of the new church (Wagner 1990, 100).
