Strategies for Cell Group (Organization of the small/cell group)

Organization of the small/cell group

As mentioned above, it is the first task to choose the potential members in order to organize the group (Cho 1981, 111). After choosing the group members, the small/cell group must be effectively organized. It is no exaggeration to say that the effective organization has a good influence on the group activities (Cho 1981, 111).

How then organize the group? First, number of the membership of a group--usually three to twelve is good as suggested above (Coleman, trans. by Cho 1991, 15). Of course, it may be different according to the group context and the leader's plan. In the light of the Bible, number of groups is various. There are different groups, the size of which is small and large. The number of a small group consists of usually three to twelve (Becker 1993a, 66).

The writer thinks that it is reasonable that a small group consists of five to seven members because this number may be effective for the leader to handle. Byond twelve in number, the closeness will be lost because it is difficult for too much members to have an intimate relationship one another. Carl F. George suggested the group size must not exceeds about thirteen people as follows:

Once the group size exceeds about thirteen people, it will lose the qualities of intimacy, accoutability, pastoral care, hands-on personal prayer, safety in self-disclosure, and surrogate extended-family support that the cell alone can deliver (George 1993, 170).

And they cannot not fully go into a discussion with each other about their Christian lives in detail in a short time during the small/cell group activity. Probably the most effective number of a small group is five under the writer's home cell group activity experiences.
