Leadership Skill (Lawrence of Arabia) .

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA

A: Description

1. Basic story

During the World War I Great Britain was fighting an unseen war waged in the vast deserts of North Africa and Arabia.

The Turkish Army, allies of the Germans, dominated the desert. The Arabs were revolting against the Turks in small bands and tribes hoping for the assistance of the British to lead them to victory.

T.E. Lawrence was a highly educated lieutenant stationed at an uneventful desk job in Cairo. Lawrence was abruptly given the opportunity to take part in a field position.

He was commissioned due to his level of education and knowledge, to assist the guerrilla Arabian revolt against the Turks and to serve as a liaison officer.

Lawrence ,who was eager for adventure and action, pursued his assignment with confidence and enthusiasm. Lawrence was led into the heart of Arab affairs and their immediate ambitions.

He observed their plans, problems, and culture intensively and grew to be a part of the natives. He sacrificed much of himself and offered his innate wisdom and leadership to the Arab revolt.

His success and achievements made him the symbol of the people's hopes. He earned their trust and became an undeniably revered leader of the Arab Army. Lawrence set high for himself and \"his new people\".

Using his wit and determination as an ally, his logistics and tactics won many small but significant and effective battles. He organized and gave hope to a people who were distressed, and exhausted.

However, the unity that the people enjoyed under Lawrence's leadership grew insecure. The disputes between the tribes persisted and as the Arabs experienced more freedom they suffered from political disorganization. Lawrence's role had an expiration.

An excessive amount of unprecedented trials befell upon him and his continued presence became questionable. As time went by, Lawrence realized his identity and sought retirement from his active duties in the Arabian land.

There were times in Lawrence's career in the desert when he suffered from disappointment and doubt but in the face of adversity he endured the greatest hardships.

He not only endured the elements of the isolated desert plains but survived the inner battles waged by differences between the Arabs and his British Army.

\"Lawrence of Arabia\" was a story of a man caught in a whirlwind and how he lived to be remembered. 2. Basic concept in the context of organization and management

2. Basic Concept in the Context of Organization Management

\"Lawrence of Arabia\" contains a series of conflicts that intertwine in the story. The war situation establishes two, major parties, the allies and the enemies. Major party contains sub-parties, factions, and a network of organizations in the form of nations, armies, and tribes.

T.E. Lawrence was an insignificant member of the British Nation and army. Although he was a minor member of the organization, the British army, he continued to sustain his pride.

In the beginning Lawrence lights a match and puts it out with his fingers showing his resistance to pain and symbolizing his desire to be part of the movement that would extinguish the Turks.

Soon after he is to be sent out into the desert he lights a match again, but this time, blowing it out after a long period of thought, showing sense and reality and symbolizing his acceptance of the situation and desire to defeat the adversities without self infliction of pain.

A scene in the lounge of the British officers depilts Lawrence disrupting a pool game when he takes the cue ball and rolling it at a pack of balls neatly in triangle formation.

This symbolizing that he would disrupt the dormant stage in which the British army was in and that he would cause an chance in the balance of powers that was prevalent at the time.

3. Leadership Vision

At first Lawrence's ambitions were to become a leader of the Arabs then as he became better acquainted with his responsibility, he saw that this vision was possible.
His ultimate vision as a leader was to see the liberation of the Arabs from the Turks and any other imperialist nation.

4. Instrumentation

Lawrence was especially oriented in using all the available resources to assist in his mission. He authoritatively influenced his British superious to support his mission relieve supplies and equipment.

He used guerilla tactics and the will or the people in carrying out surprise attacks. The one thing they lacked was artillery and heavy equipment. They mostly used guns, knives, swords, and small exploring but his wit allowed him to use the elements in his advantage.

5. Lawrence was a stunning miracle creating leader and the perfect compliment to the guerilla forces.

He was well educated and confident. He carefully planned the progress of the army. He possessed the unity and faith the people needed. He set new standards of loyalty. His ability to persuade was equaled by none. All the cunning and furtive characteristics assisted Lawrence in his mission.

Although Lawrence's strengths combined allowed him to supercede expectations his weaknesses could only prove than even Lawrence was human. Anyone who had the opportunity to meet him would certainly claim he was arrogant and conueted.

It was obvious that his confidence was far too out of proportion. His over-confidence brew much stress within him. Inexperience in the beginning was also a difficulty in addition to his free roaming emotions. Emotions conducted his actions too frequently.

As a Lawrence left his minor role in the superbly organized British Army to take a domination role in a different organization. Using his intellect and education, Lawrence probed at the weaknesses of the Arabs bringing together a new significant army.

The British Army had existed hundreds of years prior to this war but no such thing applied to the Arab Army, Lawrence was given the responsibility at his own choice to build an effective fighting force by feeding organization, strategies, and technology.

They eventually required to leave this organization to the former and further to return to a civilian role where he would be infamous and legendary yet having no part in the polices of that major organized society known as Great Britain.

B: Evaluation

1. Leadership/Management Style

Lawrence naturally assumed leadership without the demand or requests of a higher command. He offered himself voluntarily to the service of the Arabs by taking control.
First of all, he attempted to establish himself as a friend and made an effort to become a trusted part of the people.

He was extremely confident maybe overconfident yet proved his worthiness and ability by succeeding in his first almost impossible task set by himself to accomplish never before achieved task.

He was also conceited and continued to feed his lonciet but became a figure to follow and admire.

2. Organizational Mission

The mission he had was only to serve as an assistant liaison officer. He went beyond expectations in the beginning and set his goals of mission to bring order to a chaotic nation of people and giving the Arabs reason to unite in an organized revolt.
